With La traviata, its ravishing arias, compelling choral scenes, and magnificent orchestral sound, Giuseppe Verdi created the epitome of Italian opera. The tragic story of the Parisian courtesan Violetta Valéry, who gives everything for love, only to be destroyed by it, inspired Verdi to create one of his most personal operas: Turning away from idealization toward an unsparing portrayal what it means to be human — all carried by music of profound beauty.
Internationally acclaimed director Damiano Michieletto and stage designer Paolo Fantin set the story in the glamorous yet uninhibited world of the 1920s — a world poised between splendor and ruin, intoxication and loneliness. At its center is a woman in the glare of public attention while enduring the shadow of society's contempt. Dominating the stage, a gigantic, shattered mirror rises from Lake Constance. It makes Violetta’s inner and outer disintegration as visible as the superficiality of Parisian society, by which she is broken both emotionally and physically. Within this spectacular stage set, audiences experience one of the most moving operas in music history on the Seebühne for a second summer.
