YUM! is a dazzling and technologically advanced music-theatre experience that combines opera, performance art, and extended reality into a fully immersive spectacle. In a world grotesquely exaggerated and unsettlingly close at once, luxury and scarcity, beauty and decay, satire and reality collide.
The audience takes part in a decadent dinner, where an XR app transforms jelly into sparkling culinary dreams. What seems like pure joy melts into an illusion—a mirror reflecting digital simulacra, the obsession with endless consumption, and the division within society. The fusion of AR, VR, and live performance creates a dystopian atmosphere amid climate disasters, food crises, and collapsing social systems, letting the taste of the present linger on the tongue in all its bitterness and fascination.
Conceived by Studio M.A.R.S. based in Vienna, a young international collective with expertise in music, theatre, multimedia storytelling and immersive technologies, the project won the FEDORA Digital Prize 2025, which supports new paths of artistic expression in opera through digital innovation. The Bregenzer Festspiele provides Studio M.A.R.S. with a platform for the world premiere of YUM!
