Schubert’s song cycle The Fair Maid of the Mill starts with a happy-go-lucky song about a young miller. Soon, however, it becomes apparent, that the story is everything but happy-go-lucky. Instead, it is a multi-layered monodrama about unrequited love. The hero is head over heels in love with a woman who is out of reach for him. The conflict between his heart and his head almost drive him insane. In this staged version, Bass baritone Florian Boesch and the director and puppeteer Nikolaus Habjan interpret the 200-year-old subject matter in their own way. Together with the Musicbanda Franui, who describe their style as a mix of classical music, folk, jazz and contemporary chamber music, they tell this well-known story in a new way.
