Carl Maria von Weber's opera Der Freischütz became a crowd favorite in the extraordinary production by German director Philipp Stölzl: In two seasons, the 2024/25 lake stage production reached a total of around 374,000 people in 55 performances.
The eerie yet poetic world that Stölzl, who is not only responsible for the direction but also for the set and lighting design of Der Freischütz, has created for the romantic ghost story surrounding the love of the hereditary forester's daughter Agathe and the young clerk Max is located very close to the audience. Max struggles in the midst of a barren winter landscape, between crooked, half-submerged houses, skeletal trees, and horse skeletons, all under the watchful eyes of the suspicious village society, as he fights for the hand of his beloved.
