Opera you can touch and plunge into

Magical wind music, a fidgety wooden puppet and a special night at the opera

Bregenz, 16 May 24. The Young People's Festival lets kids and youngsters explore and shape the multifaceted theatrical world of the Bregenz Festival themselves in a colourful and varied programme – whether at the wind band show Zirkus Luft-i-Kuss or the children's opera Pinocchio, on backstage tours of the lake stage, at the Bregenz Orchestra Academy or on Young People's Night, when 5,000 young people will be the first to experience the new opera on the lake stage, Der Freischütz.

Zirkus Luft-i-Kuss: a magical wind music show
In collaboration with the Vorarlberg Wind Band Association, a huge band has got together for Zirkus Luft-i-Kuss to present the circus world in all its colourful splendour to spectators big and small. The circus – a staged concert – will take place in the Great Hall of the Festspielhaus on 1, 2 and 3 June 2024.

A terrible thing has happened – the special train of the Zirkus Luft-i-Kuss carrying all the animals, musicians and performers has derailed just before the Swiss border! The circus director is at a loss: it's a disaster for the entire circus, and brings with it unexpected problems. To make matters worse, the circus band has disbanded. A circus without music? Unimaginable! But fortunately, the ingenious circus magician has a wizard idea: without further ado, she transforms all the artistes into wonderful instrument animals to enable the circus to continue its journey and save the circus with a benefit concert at the Bregenz Festspielhaus.

Children's opera Pinocchio
Pinocchio, this year's opera for children aged 6 to 12, will be staged at the KOSMOS Theatre on 22 and 23 June, just four weeks before the start of the 78th festival season. This time it all centres on a fidgety character who gets on everyone's nerves. Pinocchio is loud and hyper, jumps around, talks a lot but never listens. At the same time, he is open, sociable and creative. The little wooden puppet can easily become enthusiastic about something – but keeps getting into danger in the process. Why does Pinocchio roam the world and never return to his father Geppetto? Is it simply a whim of his? Is he protecting himself against something? Is he simply a hyperactive kid? Does it have something to do with the onset of puberty? In the end, though, he rescues his father, becomes more mature as a result and takes on responsibility.

The second orchestra academy: nurturing young talent
The Bregenz Festival, together with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Stella Vorarlberg Private College of Music, is encouraging the ambitions of young artists with the orchestra academy, launched in 2022. Young musicians aged between 17 and 27 are working with the Israeli conductor Daniel Cohen on their first joint concert. They have taken on a lot for the orchestral concert on 11 August 2024: Arnold Schoenberg's Chamber Symphony No. 1 for large orchestra will be performed, as will Béla Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra, which demands great virtuosity and passionate commitment from the musicians. They will also rehearse orchestral songs by Richard Strauss together with soprano Marlis Petersen.

Children's Festival: playfully creating a play
For more than forty years now the Children's Festival, also known as FedeKi, has been delighting schoolkids. In the week before the festival opens, up to 200 children aged 6 to 11 get together to develop a piece of music theatre in a playful way. The grand finale of the creative week is a performance in front of an audience on the workshop stage.

Young People's Night: a special opera night for 5,000 people
Five days before Der Freischütz premieres, 5,000 young people will be the very first to experience the new production of the opera on the lake stage as part of Young People's Night. In the afternoon, backstage tours, workshops and cool music will start getting you in the mood for this special night at the opera.

MINT Project: DIY theatre
MINT is an acronym for mathematics, information technology, natural sciences, and technology. The Bregenz MINT Project accordingly focuses not only on acting, but above all on theatre technology. Pupils create a play together and gain experience in theatre technology in the areas of lighting, sound and stage construction. In June, they present the play on a stage they built themselves in the Festspielhaus. The project is being implemented in cooperation with the Vorarlberg State Theatre and the Rieden secondary school (Bregenz).

Opera workshops for kids
What does an opera performance actually feel like for a performer? For youngsters who would like to find out, the opera workshops for kids are an ideal opportunity to change their perspective and immerse themselves in the world of Der Freischütz. The workshop participants are helped by instructors from the drama education network Opernschlüssel to bring the stage characters to life.
