Rossini opera debuts in the Festspielhaus

Vienna/Bregenz, 6.6.23. In the coming week rehearsals start for this year’s Bregenz Festival. Meanwhile, planning for next year’s festival programme is well advanced: in the 2024 season the opera production in the Festspielhaus will be Tancredi, the festival management revealed at a press conference in Vienna today.

The opera by Gioachino Rossini, first staged in Venice’s Teatro la Fenice in 1813, will run for three performances in Bregenz, opening on 18 July 2024. The day before that the Bregenz Festival will open for its 78th season with the lake stage premiere of Carl Maria von Weber’s Der Freischütz.

Director Jan Philipp Gloger debuts in Bregenz
Tancredi is a suspenseful opera about love, trust and the impossibility of finding happiness in times of crisis. The production will be directed by Jan Philipp Gloger. The theatre director at the Staatstheater Nürnberg has also worked as an opera director since 2010, for instance at Opernhaus Zürich, the Bayreuth Festival and at the Royal Opera House in London. The set will be designed by Ben Baur, who regularly collaborates with Jan Philipp Gloger. The costume designer will be Justina Klimczyk. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Yi-Chen Lin, who is conducting the lake stage production of Madame Butterfly again in the coming season.

Tickets still available for the 2023 season
The 78th season of the Bregenz Festival opens on 19 July 2023 with a production of Ernani at the Festspielhaus. The opera is directed by Lotte de Beer, with designs by Christof Hetzer. The music director Enrique Mazzola will conduct the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. The following day, 20 July 2023, sees the first performance of Madame Butterfly, returning for its second run on the lake stage. Tickets are available for both productions.
