Andrés Orozco-Estrada new chief conductor of Vienna Symphony

Artistic director Sobotka: "An excellent choice"

Vienna/Bregenz, 29.3.18. A new chief conductor has been appointed to the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Andrés Orozco-Estrada, born in Colombia in 1977, will take over as chief conductor in the 2021/22 season. He succeeds Philippe Jordan, who will become music director at Vienna State Opera in autumn 2020.

The Vienna Symphony Orchestra has been the Bregenz Festival orchestra in residence ever since the festival was founded in 1946. Every summer it travels to Lake Constance to play in the opera productions on the lake stage and the Festspielhaus and to give three orchestral concerts.

Orozco-Estrada first worked with the orchestra in 2006. This summer he will conduct one of the three traditional concerts given by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra at Bregenz Festival. The concert features the following works: Bohuslav Martinu's Double Concerto for Two String Orchestras, Piano and Timpani (H. 271), Antonín Dvorák's Te Deum and his Symphony No. 9 "From the New World" in E minor, op. 95.

"I congratulate our orchestra on its excellent choice. I'm looking forward very much to the first orchestral concert at this summer's festival under the baton of the chief conductor designate, and also to working with him. At the same time I'd like to express my warm appreciation to Philippe Jordan," said Elisabeth Sobotka, the artistic director of Bregenz Festival.

Andrés Orozco-Estrada, 40, was born in Medellín, Colombia and studied in Vienna. Since the 2014/15 season he has been chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Houston Symphony Orchestra. He was also appointed the London Philharmonic Orchestra's principal guest conductor in September 2015. Before that he was music director of the Tonkünstler Orchestra Niederösterreich from 2009 to 2015.

The announcement was made on the Vienna Symphony Orchestra website today. More information about the orchestra is available for download in the Media tab here.
