Contract with artistic director to run until 2024

Bregenz, 13.12.19. The Bregenz Festival and the artistic director Elisabeth Sobotka are extending their collaboration until September 2024. The existing contract was due to terminate in September 2022. The Vienna-born cultural manager has directed the Bregenz Festival since 2015; she was appointed the successor to David Pountney in July 2012.

The board of the Bregenz Festival Foundation, chaired by the festival president Hans-Peter Metzler, unanimously approved extension of the contract. “Elisabeth Sobotka has led the Bregenz Festival on to new, very great successes and has further developed the festival’s artistic profile in a consistent way. We are looking forward to the coming years together with her,” said Hans-Peter Metzler. He also said he wished to thank all the artists and backstage personnel at the festival.

“The Bregenz Festival is a superb place for artistic processes and developments. I feel fulfilled by my role as artistic director and very inspired by working together with the artists and personnel. I’m very happy about the affirmation I have received in this role,” said Elisabeth Sobotka.
